If your current firmware does not understand or support M600, then you will have to flash updated firmware. There isn't a workaround for that (unless you want to do something silly like connect a loud buzzer to the runout sensor as an alarm)

You can use a filament runout sensor. These use a leaf switch held closed by the presence of filament. When the filament runs out, the switch opens up and the printer firmware will enter a special mode to allow you to replace it. I've got 6 of these workhorses that have served me well for years, but my printing seems to be moving in the industrial material space (ULTEM & up) and shrinking, so 6 is too many. I'm not in a huge hurry to let any of these babies go, but just seeing if anybody is interested in them. I have 5x 1.75...

I stuck a Keenovo 250W/24v heater directly to the underside of a MIC6 plate, and I'm using your bracket to strain-relief the corregated tubing. Hopefully it goes well :)
