Re: Vapor smoothing

Acetone works on ABS. I don't believe it works on any other materials. I'd recommend that you not use an electric skillet. I've used one in a double boiler arrangement but it works too well. Acetone boils at 130F so it lays down an excessive amount of acetone on the surface. The surface, while smoot...

Printing replacement parts in nylon?

Any reason not to use Nylon or its variant so print M2 replacement parts? I've got a couple of spools of Taulman Bridge http://taulman3d.com/bridge-features.html. Its a hybrid nylon. Shrinkage is the only concern that I can see that would be problematic.

Very cool Jules, thanks for sharing. I'm adding it to my list of things to try next.

Re: Extruder mount failed

I've looked at XTC3d. It works well. Acetone is a little faster and cheaper. I'm having decent results with my paint can system. I'll post it up when I get pics.

I've got the metal motor mount but was waiting for some printer down time to install it and the dampers. Ask and ye shall receive. :)

Re: Extruder mount failed

Thanks Jules and sorry for the confusion. I am not doing the acetone vapor smoothing in the printer enclosure. I'm smoothing in a paint can outside the enclosure. When I stop the print to change filament, I would coat the top edge of the bottle with a little acetone to make it sticky. In the pic bel...

Re: Extruder mount failed

Thanks. I started out printing them in PLA but then discovered acetone vapor smoothing with ABS. It really give them a glass like finish. I'm still surprised the mount failed due to acetone vapors. Folks who are using an acetone slurry on their glass are likely using more than I was and would see si...

Re: Anybody got an ark handy?

We didn't get it too bad. Yes, I'm south of I-10, north of westheimer, and west of beltway 8. We had 2-3 feet in the street cul-de-sac and 8 inches in the back yard when the drains couldn't keep up but when the rain relented, it went down within a couple of hours. I need to check on my friends in To...

Re: Extruder mount failed

Thanks for the confirmation. I'm surprised that such a small amount would do this but live and learn. I'll fix the motor mount and start printing replacements for the other parts. Any suggestions for alternate filament than abs? I've seen ePC recommended but I'm not crazy about the color. I have a c...

Re: Anybody got an ark handy?

We were ok on the west side. Water in the streets but haven't heard of any neighbors with water in their house. I noticed that everyone did move their cars to their driveways when the rain got bad. Lesson learned from the memorial day flooding when all the cars were under 2 ft of water.
