Re: Hatchbox PETG - Looking Good!

Thanks, that was it. I'm printing at 100 right now and it is working, so I'll back it off to 80 on the next one and see how that goes. I have a feeling the other hairspray I was using will also work with the correct bed temp (Rave 4X Mega non aerosol).

Re: Hatchbox PETG - Looking Good!

pyro why not just pick up the the plate, mist it and drop it back on the printer? only takes a second since the plate just sits there. a squirt bottle and napkin isn't a very controlled way to apply the stuff and sounds like taking a 2 sec job and turning it into a mess. ;) I just tried this with t...

Re: Filament Splicer

I just touch both ends to a soldering iron and then stick them together and quickly press them in the block. The block needs to be cold so that it solidifies quickly. The strands can be moved through the brass tubes and the ends will be pretty aligned so all you have to do is slide one piece while h...

Re: Carbon Fiber Compression Mold

At this point the process has evolved considerably and is now a proprietary commercial process that I'm not at liberty to discuss online. It still involves a boatload of M2 printers though!

Re: Brittle Black PLA

Yep, the cross under point just migrates back and forth on the spool and can go for hours like that. Usually you can hear that something is wrong though because the spool will stick and release as this is happening. It's easy to save the print by cutting the filament, pulling out the cross under and...

Re: Brittle Black PLA

Does anyone know what causes that? I had a bad batch of orange from Hatchbox a while back and it was the same thing-- filament easily snapped in half with minimal bending. Exposure to air made it even worse.

Re: Filament Splicer

Interesting phenomenon: I had a bunch of partial Hatchbox orange PLA spools that I joined together into one full spool. This particular color seem especially sensitive to moisture and becomes very brittle once exposed. So brittle that the tiny bit of preload from being spooled is enough to crack it....

Re: Filament Splicer

I'm reminded of a 1970s Braun Super-8 movie film splicer which ground mating chamfers on the two pieces of movie-film which were then glued together while clamped in position. Ha, I used to splice super-8 film back in the 80s with a machine like that. There was a viewer screen built into it too so ...

Filament Splicer

So I FINALLY got around to figuring out how to build one of these! It was harder than you would think it would be. The two issues here is that 1) heat has to only be applied at the two ends to be connected and nowhere else and 2) how to get rid of the excess plastic that mushrooms out when pushing t...
