LED's

Post by dklassen » Tue Dec 09, 2014 1:42 am

Not the best video but I got my LED's hooked up today. :D Not sure the effects are very useful, but fun anyway.

I have that same controller!

I used to have it powered directly from the RAMBo and controlled through custom gcode, but I had to give that up when I went dual extruder:

dklassen,

That's the same little controller I got for my LEDs. Since all my stuff is 24 volt, I ran two parallel strips of LED (the same length, same number of LEDs per strip) around the inside of the frame -- one inside the front edge (like yours) and one inside the back edge. The illumination is great for checking out the first layer --- if it's messed up, you can abort the print real quick and waste less filament. I also designed an offset fan bracket that has a "shelf" for mounting a short strip of 3 LEDs right under the extruder fan, behind the bed fan. REAL nice for inspecting print quality. (But I had to take that off when I put on the dual extruder beta.) The bracket files and pictures are available at http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:348480 .

I see you've found all the effects and speed controls on the remote. They have a similar controller / remote for tri-color LEDs as well. I'm sure those would be excellent for showing the M2 at a maker faire.

I got a couple reels of LEDs shipped from China, and we used them to encircle the horns on the three seniors' sousaphones for mass-band night. They had a couple lines of band members, one on either side, about 20 yards apart, to be the "paddles" and the sousaphones were the "ball" in a game of pong. (Most exercise my nephew ever got ;-) !!!)

Mine is a 24v M2 as well. Amazing how cheap you can get a roll of LED's these days. I thought about tapping into the board but I had an old 12v wall adaptor and ran it straight off of that. Now I need to figure out what to do with all the leftover LED's. I may have to buy a sousaphone. :D

They also work great as kitchen under-counter lights.

I have the same setup. One of you guys posted it a while back and I jumped on board. I'm thinking of making a diffuser from natural PLA to go over them. The problem I have is that when I turn them on, too much light reflects off the print and overexposes my webcam. I'm thinking that natural PLA would be a nice diffuser to put over them, to get more even light coverage.

Edit: Its not actually off the print. Its when the LED's reflect off the glass that they blind the camera.
