Fan shroud?

Post by jsc » Thu Mar 05, 2015 5:24 pm

With PLA and PETG, I get significant overhang curling on the back left sides of objects. I am assuming this is because the fan is at the front right.

I'm now considering trying to model a fan mount with shroud to try to get some more concentrated cooling around the back side. I am aware of a "tapir" shroud for the M2 (old pre-v3b geometry) and jimc's model (E3D specific). I need one for a v4 dual extruder setup. Before I sink any time into this, I just thought I'd ask if any of you dual-v4-using modeling experts has addressed this and has an unannounced shroud model in their back pocket? No?

Okay, I tackled it. I wanted something nice, like jimc's shroud, but the geometry is too fiddly so I went with simpler. Took me a few test prints to verify that at least some air was going to the nozzle

Should work with a single v4 as well, if that uses 50mm fans. Bed fan in the photo is the beefiest 24V 50mm fan I could find at digikey. No fan guards, so exercise some self control with your fingers and tools.

If you try it and have some suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

Tried it with the Make magazine overhang test. I printed with the overhangs facing the rear of the bed. It is also tilted 30 degrees to the left to offset the unused nozzle off the line of horizontal edges so that it doesn't interfere. (For this print it ended up not making a difference, but I've found that if there is any curling, the unused nozzle can pass over it and tilting the print slightly can help alleviate that.)

Up to 60 degrees, the leading edge was dead flat. At 70 degrees I started to see some edge curling and the bottom surface reflects that, but it still printed successfully. If I wanted to get the best possible print, I would slow it down and print with the leading edge pointing forward, towards the fan, but I wanted to see what the worst case scenario looked like. I should have done a similar print before I messed with the fans, but I didn't and I'm not inclined to redo it. Based on the amount of curling I was seeing before, I would say that some combination of my new fan and the shroud has made a noticeable difference.

Just to use up the dregs of a roll, here's a print at 40 mm/s facing the fan. A very slight imperfection along the right side; I'm printing out the right extruder and the right side gets a little bit less cooling than the left.

Not sure what your old results looked like in this test ? But this looks good !!! If I can ever get the time I plan on a tapir type setup for cooling . But time is against me right now lol .

Here's an overhang test on a real print. Top shoulders and through holes turned out great.
