'Mammoth' Part Cooler

Post by SIERRA086 » Fri Nov 11, 2016 6:46 pm

Hi everyone I'm new to 3D printing, I've been at it for a couple months now and I'm loving my M2. So far I've upgraded it with one of insta's Mic6 plates and that alone had been awesome. Over the past two weeks I've been devising a new design for a blower driven part cooler. After much trial and error I'm ready to present to you my first revision of my new 'mammoth' cooler!

Files for printing:
http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1886404

Some info:
-- This cooler is printed in 3 parts - main body, tube 1, and tube 2.

-- I used the original makergear fan/hotend connector body to accommodate the main platform for the two 50mm 24v blowers so all credit for that piece goes to makergear. I purchased the 50mm blowers from reprapchampion.com.

-- blowers are wired together and wired into a pigtail cut from the original 50mm cooling fan.

-- I used black hatchbox ABS @ 240c hotend/ 110c build plate, .2mm resolution, .40 extrusion width, .89 extrusion multiplier. (first time ever using ABS, very happy with the result)

-- Printed directly on build plate's PEI surface with no helpers such as glue or slurry. Adhesion was excellent.

--Supports not required on the two tubes if printed with rectangular opening side on build plate, supports are required on the main body.

Looks awesome, I wonder though if the height and center of gravity will have an effect on printing in general

Thanks! I have some free time this weekend so I'll be testing it, I didn't get to do a benchy run last night but I'm going to get it running on something right now to see how it preforms. Generally the walls are very thin on the tubes so there isn't much weight there. The main body is semi thick but I went light on the infill to keep weight down while preserving strength - I'll get back to you on how it prints :)

Hey insta, I've been meaning to drop by your thread to tell you how much your PEI MIC6 plate has helped me. This ABS sticks to it perfectly. Actually without that plate I don't know if I could have printed this so easily.

Anyway to answer your question - I printed this exactly as thingiverse shows when you look at the automatically generated pics where they color the models blue for you.

Just to give an update: after using this part cooler for a few weeks now I couldn't be happier with how it performs. Only thing I plan to work on/ update is the design of the two nozzles that direct the air onto the part. I think there's some room for improvement there.
