M2 x/y stepper isolation dampers NinjaFlex!

Post by airscapes » Sun Sep 09, 2018 12:31 am

I have no idea on longevity but these work great without the Twist offset of the shaft that you get with the pre-made steal dampers that only use 2 screws to anchor to the frame.
Not Dead silent but close!
I saw the STL on Thingivers and the person who had made them had a drawing with measurement so I made my own model with onshape which is public if you have an account. I have attached the STL files for a 1mm damper and .9 mm isolation washers.
Printed the damper with .5 nozzle at .2mm and the washers at .3mm height
You will need to locate additional flat washers that are almost as wide as the isolation washers and less the .7mm thick or your screws will not be long enough. I have a lot of reclaimed hardware from my father who was a HAM and scrapped a lot of gear before I was born. The washers I used were 5/16 in diameter with a 9/64 hole and .6 and about 1/32 thick.

To assemble place the damper between the motor and frame and install the screws as they came out with stock washer without the isolation washers. Tighten the belt and screws. Now remove them one at a time and place the new washer on first, then ninjaflex isolation washer and then the original washer and tighten it back up.
On the one screw that is counter sunk on the X motor, just use the isolation washer and the original washer letting the isolation be squished into the slot as you tighten it.
If when running you still get a really high pitch sound from X, install 2 isolation washers and leave that one screw slightly loose if need be.

Very interesting. I have a roll of ninjaflex. Never used it before though but this would be a good start

They look to be the same size!
If you have not used NinjaFlex, it is a little temperamental.. This was my first use of it and I had to rig a gravity feed for the spool. It is kind of a must as it does not feed well so pulling it up didn't work well at all. Also .5 nozzle and really slow.. 10mmS..

I made these for the slash spool and custom mounts to sit on my enclosure
