AC powered bed heater

Post by airscapes » Mon Sep 30, 2019 8:20 pm

Anyone ever update the M2 heated bed to use an AC powered heater? This thing is really painful waiting for it to reach 110C with the stock DC heater.

an AC powered heater
Imagine the excitement when a wire carrying line voltage frays and shorts to something else in the braided sheath!

Instead, use the RAMBo's MOSFET to control an off-board DC-DC solid state relay, rewire the heater to run from a (somewhat) higher voltage external power brick, and tune for minimum smoke. I have a hotrod M2 platform, but the principle applies:

When the wires fray, the result won't kill you.
