PolySupport filament

Post by nirfriedman » Sat Sep 12, 2015 6:43 pm

I purchased this mystery "support filament" from MakerGear's "undocumented options" page. It arrived yesterday, and it turns out it is something called "PolySupport" from polymakr. From the page that came with it I understand that it is mainly intended for combination with PLA. I am mostly doing ABS, and tried it.

So far the experience is good. It seems that this stuff is strong, very self-adhesive, but also brittle and does not adhere to the ABS. Removing it from the print is supereasy (usually by the time I get the print off the glass, the ABS part already is jumping out of the support). It allowed me to use very dense support which results in much better lower surface finish.

The downside, this thing is expensive (especially when you add MakerGear shipping costs), ending at ~$50 for 1/2 KG spool. I hope that the price will go down in the future....

I also get sometime "curled" edges on some of the support (Simplify3D generated), and so probably need to fine tune the parameters...
