I have found the eSUN wood filament to look very plastic coming off the bed, but a little bit of sanding gets rid of the plastic look, and a little bit of staining makes it look indistinguishable from wood as long as you choose your print orientations carefully. I'm pretty sure the base wood they use is bamboo, so it comes out with a very light color, very light-weight, and no carpentry-shop odor while printing. I keep the infill very high (75%) because otherwise it feels as light as balsa. Picture below of my chess set done in eSUN wood filament except for the frame of the chessboard, which was done in MakerGear black PLA.

In case you didn't see it on Thingiverse. . .

You will want to sand it down before staining, or it won't take as well. I used a normal stain (MinWax Provincial 211 for the dark pieces, I think MinWax Maple something-or-other for the light pieces. Finished with a polyurethane semi-gloss coat.

This may sound like a weird question to ask but... can someone tell me if a piece of this wood type filament by itself would float in water?

I have some that does, but it may just be because of the 25% infill.

EDIT: I just cut a piece of hatchbox wood right off the roll and it does float.
