WOOD PLA

Post by Pekish79 » Wed Nov 11, 2015 9:22 pm

I am testing many wood pla I bought already the cheapest 4 or 5 even if I only tested 2 so far (take time to actually really test them on long print like 8-12hours)

---------------------------- I OWN THESE (all wood will be printed at 40m/s as some would not work at higher speed some would but i want to keep it constant so i can compare better results)

Alchement - 31/kg (https://www.alchement.com/wood-series/w ... brown.html)
- It's very fragile and watery it look nice like paper the color is brigther it doesnt change color with temperature
I wouldn't use this to make any small detail is even more fragile then Saint Smart (it could have been my roll I will update it if once is over next roll behave differently)
I think so far for "Easy and Nice result Hatchbox is best but this is very bright nice color and cheap but with high temperature 210+ is too soft but even at 200 stay quite soft and even pumping up retraction and all other possible way it's hard to make it clean

as you can see in the picture is the only one that have brench at each temperature and in the torture test is the only one that start shagging in the overhang at high temperature (it doesn't shag at 190-200 but the other 2 doesn't shag at all)

COMPARISION PIC

HatchBox - 35$/kg (http://www.amazon.com/HATCHBOX-1-75mm-3 ... B01092XXD4)
Work pretty well it's a nice looking medium-light brown
I used 205-210 (bed temperature 37 with zebraplate) nozzle 0,35 no problem 100% succesfull prints unless i mess up something
(BRITTLE AS ALL WOOD PLA)
Image
after doing 2 test for temperature i can say best temperature for this filament with Makergear M2 is between 200-205 (closer to 205)
**NO COLOR CHANGE**
i guess each roll could be slightly different so honestly i advice to print the temperature test every time u use a new roll for precise prints
here is the picture! (i am going to do the same for the Saint Smart i hope it won't jam my nozzle again)
Image

oh the side note the feeling of the material i printed the building at 205 degree is very nice not plastic more like paper board not very woody but nicer more refined looking the pure plastic (i guess pure plastic would work better on futuristic building)

Saint Smart DARK - 36$/kg (http://www.amazon.com/SainSmart-1-75mm- ... +pla+saint)
Very difficult to use i had some successful prints but i had to throw away 50% of them
Every time i raise the temp over 200 it jams (i had to clean my nozzle removing the hothead TWO TIMES)
I tried bed from 50 to 35 and still often moves or corner lift up
i would strongly advice to use 0,5 nozzle (that could fix both a better temperature that will fix some layers adhesion problems and first layer adhesion)
the color is dark that is nice for "expensive looking wood" in architecture model (but only on details as big piece look very plastic) and actually it really work better on small pieces where success rate raise a little
(VERY VERY BRITTLE)
Image
Here is the temperature test COLOR DOESN'T CHANGE range of printing 190-210 all seem to be good but over long print i notice it jamming at 210 so i would go with 200 to be safe
Image
it looks less red but is just the light (is getting dark here it look more red during the day with natural light)
I think this material is not bad just harder to print with the other one was way more user friendly and this is slightly more brittle too

Zen Toolworks - 41$/kg (http://www.amazon.com/Zen-ToolworksTM-P ... s+wood+pla)
This is probably my second favorite after HatchBox but has a slightly more plastic feeling even if the color is very intresting and the texture is not as plastic as Saint Smart
overall print is as clean as hatchbox they advice .5 nozzle but i had no problem with .35 overall a good alternative even if less "paperish" feeling but probably better for high glossy parquet type of feeling

Zen is in the center
(from left to right Gizmo-Alchemist-Zen-Hatchbox-Saint Smart)

Gizmo Dorks - 41/kg (http://www.amazon.com/Gizmo-Dorks-Filam ... k+wood+pla)
Color is very similar to Alchement (i will put a picture of the two) is a little bit more plastic looking (alchement have a very strong feeling of paper-like)
Overall is very very brittle this one as well (or maybe it stucked too much to my plate it was hard to remove and i broke 2 trying as they just break easily)
doesn't change color (no news none of this so far change color with temp)
has a slightly more yellowish tone then Alchement and doesnt make as many "hairs" Alchement made hairs at any temperature as it was very liquidish when heated up this one i think since it look more like plastic behave more like that too so the hairs are only at high temperature 240-230 but around 210 is fine
Overall other then beeing very very brittle (i will have to make a chart from the more brittle to the less brittle) there is not much to say if u are okey with a little more plastic look but more precise print this win over alchement if u like an absolute no plastic feeling but harder to print clean go Alchement
Image
gizmo on the left (less hair and slightly more shiny plastic looking)

eSun 56$/kg (http://www.amazon.com/eSUN-filament-Nat ... =eSUN+Wood)

Very plastic looking it's the only one that actually change color with temperature but it really doesn't look like wood at all
it could be easily light brown pla... it's less brittle then the others but it doesn't look like wood so far the most disappoiting

i think i will need to get a 0.5 nozzle i have 0.25 and 0.35 when i first bought the M2 i though i would never have used a .5 but i guess sometimes having line .55 is not the end of the world the only thing is that i dont like the .55 - 1.1 type of modeling

i usually redo each model according to the thickness of the wall .4-.8-1.2-1.6 (nozzle .35) work nice .3-.6-.9-1.2 work nice too (nozzle .25) the .5 really bother me do you think i could use it .5-1.0-1.5 or is really not good to match the size of the extrusion with the size of the nozzle? maybe i can keep the thickness up something like Z .25 and X-Y .5

so much testing to do and so little time :P

the only wood filament i have used to date is esun which printed no trouble at all. just an fyi, its so lightweight that the .5kg spool almost fills a full kg size spool so dont be deceived by the weight and think your getting a 1/2 spool.

While you are testing, I would like to see an example of how well each brand takes wood stain.

I made a tower with temperature from 190-220 (that is mostly what those filament advice to use)

i will post the picture still printing last piece of the house

Based on your prelim testing I picked up some hatchbox wood filament and I have to say its amazing stuff. I am printing at 65mm/s with it and it works flawlessly. Chess board print here we come.
