Cleaning PETG fuzz with soldering iron

Post by zemlin » Sun May 15, 2016 1:07 pm

Had some light PETG stringing to clean up. I set the temp on my soldering iron for about 200C. That was high enough to collect the PETG, but low enough that light contact with the part didn't leave tracks. Made for pretty quick clean up. I have a heat gun and have used that, but I like that soldering iron because it pick up the plastic rather than just balling it up on the surface of the part.

Doesn't that gunk up your soldering iron?

Crank the temperature up and it wipes off easy enough.

I've been meaning to get a replacement tip for a Hakko FX-888D to use for printing rework. Unfortunately, it looks like all the tips for those are all consistently in the $10 range. Why are they so expensive, relatively speaking?

zemlin, you should try a welding test.

Maybe because Hakko is so dang good. I have a Hakko 936. Had it for years and the tip I use most still looks brand new.
Haven't experimented with welding parts yet.

No, I mean, I know they're good, and they're not THAT expensive. I meant, why are the TIPS so expensive. You can get 936 tips for 40 cents each, but the FX-888 tips are $10.

That is a bit odd. I had not shopped for tips, but a 10 pack for the 936 is the same price as a single tip for the 888.

I've been cleaning PETG fuzz with a push button blowtorch. Just flash it real fast and all the fuzz is instantly gone. Hold the flame on a little longer while moving back and forth and you can even put a sheen on the surface or improve the transparency on a clear part.
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted.
