Where Do You Buy Your Filament?

Post by CCRN » Mon Dec 19, 2016 3:49 am

I have been buying off Amazon, brands include eSun, Hatchbox, iXCC, Dockwell, 3DSolutech. The prices are great and most are prime eligible. It seems like colors are bought and sold out very quickly on Amazon. I have been waiting for a spool of Hatchbox purple that I like, but it hasn't been in stock for weeks, despite the vendor saying its coming. Once it does become available, I feel like I need to buy more than I need to avoid running out. Then I get the "You need to stop buying filament!" from my wife! I have also bought some PLA from Ultimachine. Quite expensive, but they had a color that I bought with my machine that Makergear stopped selling.

I suspect most of the Amazon filament that sells for around $25 is from China and USA manufactured filament is going to be about twice the cost. I am wondering what other reputable vendor I should consider that has quality filament and has a more consistent availability.

Thoughts?

overall you cant really go wrong with esun. i have probably printed over 100 spools of their stuff and its very consistent. in 100 spools i cant say i remember a single bad spool for any reason. someone on here said they had a poorly wound 1 and the old pla from a year or two ago was a little brittle but havent heard that complaint in a very long time. other than that, complaints seem far below average for a filament company. fair priced as well. many of us get or stuff from intservo.com. william has been very good to the makergear community over the past couple years.

This is a timely thread, as I have done a crazy amount of printing lately, and was just thinking about just this.

In my opinion for PLA, Hatchbox can't be beat. Every color is happy printing at 200 - 205 degrees. Never an issue for me.
I have tried so many other brands from Amazon, and have not had good results. 3dMeltInk was horrible to print with. 3dSolutech has caused me quite a few jams. Matterhackers cheaper line (not-pro) is made in China and is horrible as well.

PETG - I have used eSun successfully and that is where I look for PETG.

You can also get hatchbox from http://www.megalowmart.com/ - They are an authorized seller.

Any new filament I buy is Inland/eSUN, as I burn through my old spools I've collected from various places. I did get a spool of Breathe 3DP PLA++, and that stuff was awesome. If I could afford to run it for every spool, I probably would.

Are you buying it all on Amazon?

Since Rick would not want us to talk about competitors on this site, I will not mention ABS or PLA. I have tried PETG from a MO manufacturer that seems good, and you can get it for $15/kg, if you do not care what color you get. :? I have noticed that Ninjaflex from Amazon can be priced very differently by color, too.
I highly recommend 3DXTech for carbon fiber or glass filled filament, and some other exotics. Gizmo Dorks also has some interesting exotics.

You can also get eSun directly from Will at http://www.intservo.com/ if it's not listed on Amazon.
