Loose temp probe thermister?

Post by Capt. John » Sun Oct 05, 2014 5:55 pm

Temp socket in one of my all metal hot ends is very loose and does not fit like it should.
I know this will tend to give erroneous readings in actual true temp.

Is there a way to fix this?

Capt. John,

A few ideas......

I suppose you could take the heater and thermistor out, drill and tap the aluminum block and put in a setscrew. That's a little detailed and something I'd likely screw up, though, me and my big power drill.

Perhaps pull the thermisor out, then take one or two fine strands of copper from some finely-stranded wire and push them into the hole in the block with the thermistor, kind of like shims. Just be sure you don't short out the thermistor!

Perhaps put some heat sink compound on the thermistor and push it in, with the wires basically "leaning" it in. It won't be much snugger, but the goop will help keep the heat transfer between the block and the thermistor up to speed. I think you can still get heat shrink compound at Shady O'Rack....

Just be careful in handling the thermistor, as the tiny wires are solid and repeated flexing could break one off...

I haven't used this kit yet, probably I'll contact Josh and see what MGs willing to do.
