yes i have heard some guys just using a rubber grommet. just cut it so it can be opened up and put around the z-screw. whatever works i guess

A pair of silicone rubber baby buggy bumpers atop the original Z-axis stepper worked pretty well:

The upgraded stepper didn't let the bed fall freely, so it didn't need the bumpers.

FYI my M2 kit (received about 2weeks ago) came with a rubber grommet/washer already installed on top of the Z-axis stepper flange, I assume to act as a cushion for the falling bed. I still work to avoid it dropping whenever possible though.
