How long is a 1kg 1.75mm filament roll?

Post by sprior » Sat Apr 26, 2014 3:34 am

I'm trying to estimate material costs for a print given the total filament length. Does anyone happen to know the approx length of 1.75mm filament on a 1 kg roll for PLA and ABS (assuming their weight might differ)?

I have in my head a figure of 330m, which I got from reading several threads a while ago. That is what I use.

If a kg of filament costs anywhere in the neighborhood of $30, a decent order of magnitude estimate is just to move the decimal place over by two of the length in mm for the price. So 10,000 mm would be ~$1.

well according to the makegeeks website pla is 302k mm and abs is 240k mm.

According to Inventor ABS has a density of 1.06 g/ccm, PLA 1.25 g/ccm, PET 1.38 g/ccm and Nylon 1.13 g/ccm.

ABS: 1.75 mm 392 meter/Kg
PLA: 1.75 mm 333 meter/Kg
PET: 1.75 mm 301 meter/Kg
Nylon: 1.75 mm 365 meter/Kg

There is another cool tool called 3D Print Calculator from delsyd.com.
Download here.

Hah, if ABS is denser, then MakerGeeks is shortchanging their PLA buyers by a little and their ABS buyers by a lot.

If you want to be shortchanged go with MakerBot. They had the 1kg spools for $48, then the newer models use a "large" spool which is 10% less by weight, but they liked the price so they kept that.

I just finished a largish 6 hour print, and decided to weigh it.

Simplify3D says it took 29807.5 mm, and model + supports weigh in at 70g, maybe 71g (it couldn't make up its mind, but settled on 70).

Taking the area of a cylinder of diameter 1.75mm and height 29807.5mm, I get 71.7 ml, so between 0.976 g/ml and 0.990 g/ml, very close to MichaelH's cited density.

The next step would be to weigh my spool full and empty to determine the actual amount I got, and thus estimate its length, but I didn't do that.
