Best Waterproof Glue?

Post by Capt. John » Sat Jun 28, 2014 12:55 pm

What's the best waterproof glue to use on ABS, or PET+?

When I was a kid in the 1950s, making AMF glue together models, used Testor's cement
Don't know if they even sell this stuff anymore due to issues with dummies who sniffed it.

2 part epoxy is to messy, hate Super Glue, cuz that stuff is runny and messy and sticks to your
skin for days.

Ready for suggestions and thanks beforehand for you help!

John, the strongest way to bond these together is solvent welding them. Methylene chloride will bond pet, abs, pla and most other plastics. You can find it on amazon. Search weld-on adhesive. Its not a glue its just a solvent. It usually comes with a needle bottle to apply it. Put the 2 pieces together and the solvent will wick into the joint and melt the plastic together. The testors cement works the same way but will only work on abs.

Jim, what about the liquid paint stripper I got to clean the hot end, would that work as a solvent?
I'll give it a try but I'm not at home right now.

yes john, thats the stuff you want. dont apply it then stick the parts together like regular glue. stick the parts together how you want them then some of the solvent on the joint will suck right in and melt the two plastics together. the solvent will eventually completely flash off and work its way out of the plastic leaving a strong joint. that usually takes 24 hours or so to fully come out

jin, the problem with the paint stripper is that its not pure. paint stripper has methylene chloride mixed in a base that is designed to not let it flash off so quick. this holds the solvent on the surface so it has time to work and break down the paint film. there is usually alot of ammonia and other stuff in there as well as a bunch off goopy crap i cant identify. definitely not good for making any kind of strong glue joint. the weld-on #4 is pure, clear and thinner than water. much like acetone only more toxic and much stronger.
