SPAM Prevention

Post by rpollack » Sun May 04, 2014 5:34 pm

Spam has started to show up. To help prevent spam I am going to turn on moderation for the first 3 messages for new users and see how it goes.

+1 -- and let us know if there's anything we humble "members" can do to help.

Thanks, Rick. Glad to see the spam gone, although sorry that it has to be an extra burden upon you (I run a few mail lists myself, so I know how it goes!).

Sounds like a good plan.

The funny thing is that when I saw the thread entitled "fishing lures" posted by "the lure guy" in the topic list I was SURE it was going to be spam, but it really was about 3D printing fishing lures. Gave me a chuckle.

I am caught by the anti-spam trap. A drawback of phpBB vs. GG.

I've had a phpBB board since 2004. Currently I use the Artodia: Helion style that offers a slightly
larger easier to read Verdana font on a white background. Theme or style used here is the default phpBB sub silver, or pro silver.

To see what free Artodia Helion theme looks like, please use the below link:

http://www.artodia.com/phpbb-styles/helion/

Appointing more moderators to cut the slam, or flaming posts is one way.

There's many excellent candidates, judging by the way many of them that helped me ASAP figure things out.
This board is a tremendous resource with lightening quick devoted members willing to help out!
Much better/quicker than going thru regular tech support.

Another is to web-search applying new members to see how many boards they've registered at.
More than likely, you'll spot spammers right away.

Then, choosing admin to OK new members upon signing up and not giving an instant in is another.
My community is a lot smaller compared to what goes on here.
