Spongy Walls

I am using an M2 with Simplify to create essentially a box. I have made the bottom 1/8" and the walls 3/32"

The bottom is solid.

The walls are spongy and crack.

Is 3/32" too small OR is can I fix this using settings?

Thanks.

we need some more info. what material, how many perimeters, infill %, etc. maybe post a pic of the s3d preview showing us how its slicing maybe 1/2 way up the wall.

3/32" is a little less than 2.5mm, so with a minimum wall width of about 0.5mm, you should have a wall thickness of 4 filament widths. Normally, this would make a reasonably strong wall. So it is a problem that is most likely to be solved with the correct settings. Like (the other) Jim said, if you post a picture and tell us your settings or upload a factory file, we can make an educated guess. . .

My guess would be that the walls printed as hollow, in which case spongy is expected. You should be able to double check what S3D did by exploring the preview.
It might have been narrow enough that it didn't bother infilling whatever gap it had. Is there some kind of minimum-area-to-infill setting ? Otherwise try re-modelling the box with wall thickness just slightly higher than an even multiple of the extrusion width. Ie if the extrusion width is 0.42mm, then make the wall 0.85 or 1.69 or 2.53mm and see if that helps.

Or set extrusion width to "Auto". I think Simplify3D is smart enough to adjust it to avoid empty infill areas.

I had been using the default settings on the latest version of Simplify. I reprinted the 6 hour job and the part came out fine.

The setting that worked:

Extrusion Multiplier .93
Extrusion Width: Manual .4

Layer Height .1
Outline/Perimeter Shells 6

Interior Fill 15%
Outline Overlap 15%
Minimum Info Length 2
Print Sparse Infill Every 2

Spongy

Extrusion Multiplier .90
Extrusion Width: Manual .35

Layer Height .2

Outline/Perimeter Shells: 2

Interior Fill 20%
Outline Overlap 15%
Minimum Info Length 5
Print Sparse Infill Every 1

The base problem I have is little information about what all the setting and the effect of moving them. What rules govern their interlinking?

When I upgraded Simplify, I got a new set of parameters and---bam!

tim, have you noticed s3d doing that?.....adjusting width on the fly to fit the extrusion into certain areas? i thought the auto just configured the width for the nozzle size your using. i have always wondered if it adjusted a little during the slicing but i havent seen this ever happen. it will still leave gaps if on auto. i certainly could be wrong though which is why i asked your findings.

No, sorry, I was just going on what I thought S3D should be doing. It's disappointing to know that it doesn't actually do that.

ok, im not saying it doesnt do it just that i have never noticed it.

It does NOT auto-adjust on the fly. Newer versions of Slic3r DOES do that with a parameter turned on.
