Over extrusion using default S3D ABS profiles

Post by loiphin » Fri Aug 07, 2015 11:31 am

Hi all,

I am a newbie to all this 3D printing malarky, and have been having troubles with some ABS prints I recently did. I made a replacement filament drive (by jimc) in ABS and all the tolerences seemed a bit messed up. jimc suggested it is probably due to over extrusion.

So I set about printing a number of those 20mm calibration cubes. Initially I checked the amount of filament fed into the extruder by measuring it. I got 98mm actually fed when I commanded the printer to extrude 100mm. So seems close enough (to me at least). I also checked my roll of ABS and its pretty much 1.75mm spot on and I checked in a few different places, at different angles.

On my version of S3D 3.01 the default M2 ABS extruder multiplier is set to 1.1.

So I printed out four test cubes and these were the results.

1. 95% infill, 1.1 multiplier (Dimensions 20.36mm x 20.32mm x 21.2mm)
2. 95% infill 1.05 multiplier (Dimensions 20.1mm x 20.16mm x 20.64mm)
3. 100% infill 1.0 multiplier (Dimensions 20.05mm x 20.05mm x 20.70mm)
4. 100% infill 0.95 multiplier (Dimensions 20.05mm x 20.01mm x 20.02mm)

So in the end I reduced the multiplier from 1.1 to 0.95! Quite a drastic change. Cube #4 looks pretty good to me. So I hope I can finally re-print my extruder drive and it will come out okay.

If you have calipers, double check your results by measuring the wall of a single perimeter print: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1964
