Thanks everyone. Ordered a noctua and buck converter.

I'm testing this theory now. I unplugged the extruder fan and replaced it with a 240ohm resistor (actually a 190ohm & 50ohm in series) and everything seems to work the same. The fan on the electronics box sounds a bit faster.

cheers,
c

If you run hotter filaments and longer prints at faster speeds leave it on . It helps eliminate the dreaded filament doubled over itself and caught in the filament drive.

So far, so good. Quiet and simple as can be 8-)

How about heat creeping through the mount and into the bearing carraige? Does that mount feel like it gets real warm or hot over a long period?

It hasn't been bad yet, however, I've only printed PLA and have been using the bed fan with no shroud so some of that air is aiding in cooling the aluminum plate. I guess a long PETG print could be a different story.

I'm 2hrs into a PLA print ATM with the extruder fan still disabled (been off for a few days).

Checking with an IR thermometer:

Stepper: 106F
Stepper Planetary: 86F
Aluminum extruder plate (that hot-end and motor mount attach to): 104F

The room that the printer is in is about 68F

The gear that drives the filament should be even less than the 86F of the planetary since the heat has farther to travel and it doesn't have nearly as much surface area in contact as the planetary housing does with the stepper (which is putting more heat into the system than the hot end!)*. I think that the extruder fan really is superfluous with the v4 extruder.

cheers,
c

*v4 is an EXCELLENT design.

Totally agree. Here's the file for the filament drive cover if you want it.

The heat break on the actual hot end works so well you can touch the mount with your finger (even right where the hot end connects) and its hardly warm.

Like I said I've been running this way for 3 months and haven't had any problems.
