They don't have software for a Mac, that's why I had to get the laptop... grrr. Oh well, that's what I get for being a Mac guy. With my setup I can do from about 3" to 12" but you can go much larger if you build a larger calibration panel. I just have the stock David panels. I still think for the money the David SLS is the best. In fact it's plenty good for reverse engineering applications and I've done several for commercial clients. If you endeavor to put your own system together it's a lot less coin. There a few guys on the David forum that do amazing work with the SLS-2

Whats the typical amount of time to do a scan? and what software do you need for reverse engineering?

The downloaded software is "free" until you want to do something so what does the license cost?

The scan itself is fairly fast depending on the complexity of the the model. The time consuming part is aligning and post processing. My reengineering talents are extremely limited and I don't have the software I really need. I use a combination of DesignSpark, FreeCad and a couple others. On one model I can spend from an hour to three or four at least for most of the types I scan. I'm sure some folks spend way more.

So what I found was getting digitizing done starts with a base cost of $300.

The 123D Catch software is having issues according to the Forum and the Agisoft Photo software is nice but I can't get a decent model. Since I don't do this for income I can't justify $3000 for a good pro grade entry level scanner. I have the Form and Matter scanner ordered from Amazon and its a 30 day return if it doesn't work.

Although, if you look at the grayscale shots about halfway down, you'll find that the results were... not awful is the best I can give it, as far as geometry reconstruction goes.
