OT materials question

Post by Toby » Mon Jun 09, 2014 9:51 pm

I've been using some tape that's made for outdoor vents. It's really sticky and in the process of cutting it I gummed up a good pair of scissors. Now I can't get the gunk off. Any ideas what's the simplest solvent likely to remove it? I tried alcohol and that didn't do anything.

Have you tried "Goo Gone"? It's specifically for adhesive residue. Also see all the comments at http://kk.org/cooltools/archives/3754 for many many more recommendations. There is also Un-Du, and generic golf club grip solvent: http://kk.org/cooltools/archives/1194

Just be aware that any piece of paper towel or cloth with "Goo Gone" on it will stink up your entire house. Best to deposit it in a trash can outside.

well at work i am removing adhesive residue from something everyday either from tape or decals and vinyl letting or something. besides the goo gone that jin mentioned there are tons of solvents out there of different strengths that will work. the most gentle solvent and a good one to use is plain old mineral spirits. is pretty safe stuff. you can get it all over you and not have to worry too much and it wont melt plastic. you will need to soak the adhesive in any solvent you use for a length of time. after that just jump right to lacquer thinner or acetone. just keep it off the handle if its plastic.

WD40, spray it and wait. Peanut butter, lacquer thinner, nail polish remover.

FYI, for removing strongly-adhered self-adhesive labels (in many cases, not all) without harming the paint underneath (usually), lighter fluid (such as you get at a drug store for use with your Zippo lighter) is a good choice.

Learned this working in a summer job at a self-adhesive film/foil/paper manufacturer for a few summers way back in the college days (late 70s). Of course, things are a bit different now. Back then we had quite a bit of open use of acetone, toluene and methyl ethyl ketone.

Now you know the reason for my mental state or lack thereof!
