Post by metrons » Wed Feb 11, 2015 7:46 pm

I'm asking since i'm sure some glues may destroy the ABS? if not i was just going to use super glu? any suggestions?

i have a large printed character which is in about 8 pieces and i need to glue him together so i can eventually paint him.

ABS, glue together with ABS pipe cement from the hardware store.

I've had good success with the hobby grade medium super glue. In cases were the connection is pretty snug and air tight. The "medium" glue is not runny like the regular retail stuff so it doesn't make a big mess and doesn't dry instantly, you need to hold it in place for about 20 seconds. I wouldn't recommend the super glue in cases were the parts are going to be moving or flexing though since super glue tends to be brittle.

ABS pipe cement, or DIY your own ABS glue with ABS scraps dissolved in pure acetone in an airtight container until it is your desired consistency. You can get by with pure acetone directly, but it is a bit tricky to apply as it runs everywhere. You can use the same filament color as the pieces you're joining to get a color match.

If you have a Dremel (Who doesnt?) you can also try friction welding. Depending on the case, it may be a viable option.
