How to Print Line Supports rather than Box Supports?

Post by w22 » Mon Oct 03, 2016 1:13 pm

Please see attached. Is there any way I can tell Simplify 3D to print only "Line Supports" vs "Box Supports". The Line Supports are amazing and strip right off while with the box supports I have to grab needle nose plyers and literally, "crush", them off printed objects leaving a nasty chalked remain.

Yes, on the Support tab in S3D set your Support Infill Angles to just one entry at 0 degrees.

You can try using dense supports too.

I set the Support Infill Angles at one set with 0 value but I still get what I attached above in my first post, still half and half on support types within one print.

That is the single line support. They go in a straight line that hits a corner, turns and heads back in the other direction.

Oh, I know what you want....you don't want the turns to happen underneath your print....just increase the Extra Inflation Distance by a couple of millimeters. All of the ends will happen out away from the print. You'll just get straight lines under the actual print.

Thanks for trying to figure it out. I'm not the best describer when it comes to 3D Printing tech support. Please see attached. The pink lines are what I want to happen with the support print. The X's are what's currently there that become impossible to remove when the print has been removed from the heating bed.

You can change the orientation of the support, but S3D only ever does single line support in one direction. In other words, you can have the lines running east-west, which gives you support running as you want it to at the top of your picture, but any support underneath on the left side is going to run in a direction perpendicular to what you want.

If you rotate the angle of the support, the left side will be fine, but the support across the top will be wrong.

Just the nature of the support generation in S3D. You can't break it up.

Have you tried putting in a couple of dense support layers as Steve suggested? (about 60% is good). And use a vertical separation of about 0.3 mm for PLA. It's not as hard to remove the dense support - just peels right off.

I set mine to 0.5 mm for very dense support. it would be close to 50% infill density.
