Simplify3D settings re a 0.4mm nozzle. Advice needed...

I have been using a MakerGear M2 (24volt V4 hot end) for a few years now with great success using the standard 0.35mm nozzle.

Recently I purchased a 0.4mm hardened nozzle from P3-d, however, my print quality has suffered. I am printing PLA filament.

The only setting I have changed in the S3D software was the nozzle size to 0.4mm. Are there any other settings I should change?

I have searched this forum but was unable to find any settings regarding 0.4mm nozzles per se.

Any help would be appreciated

In the process of changing the nozzle, you also changed the initial Z offset from the platform and (most likely) bumped the platform hard enough to misalign it. The new nozzle almost certainly isn't exactly 0.40 mm in diameter, so you must recalibrate the Extrusion Multiplier, it has a different thermal conductivity that will affect the extrusion temperature (probably by not-very-much), and most likely has a different tip profile affecting the surface finish.

If you treat a different nozzle as "I just got a new printer!" and re-run all the basic calibration steps, it'll (probably) work just fine.

Hello ednisley,

Thanks for the reply. I have recalibrated the Z-gap and for good measure re-leveled the bed. However, the print quality is very stringy as you can see from the attached image.

I suspect there are other settings I need to adjust in S3D. What "Default Printing Speed"? The present for a 0.35mm nozzle is 4800mm/min. Also, what extruder temperature should I now use for the stainless steel nozzle? The original 0.35mm nozzle was, of course, brass I believe.

And if there are any settings I have forgotten to mention within the S3D software, please don't hold back.

John

PS. I can not work out how to post an image. I will post later when I find out how!

Hello Ed,

Yes, I recalibrated the Z-gap and also, re-leveled the bed. However, the printed items are still incredibly stringy looking. I would post an image but I can not work out within this forum, how to do that! I have checked the FAQ but how one attaches images seems to be missing...

What should I set as the Default Printing Speed? The present setting is 4800mm/min (i.e. for the original brass 0.35mm nozzle).
Also, what should the extruder temperature be? The new 0.4mm nozzle appears to made of stainless steel rather than brass.

Any help appreciated.

John

New users must post a few sensible messages before getting full access to the forum; you're doing fine. After you've been here a while, you'll notice a complete lack of spammers ... [grin]

If you haven't done so already, work through the Beginner's Guides listed in this post:

Going back to the basics and following the tuning recommendations should get you set up again. Everybody forgets the details, so the checklists will remind you what to do.

The answers to all the "how fast?" / "how hot?" / "how thick?" questions depend on which filament you're using and, to some extent, what you're trying to print. The nozzle material will be largely irrelevant in the context of all the other adjustments.

After you're set up again, these tips will become more relevant:

Good hunting!

You need to revisit your extruder tab in S3D.

What is your extrusion multiplier?
What is your extrusion width set to? Auto? Manual?

What brand of PLA?

Retraction settings?

Thanks everybody for their inputs and suggestions.

I was able to solve the problem and now my items are being printed without the very stringy appearance.

The solution was to realise that because I had replaced the original 0.35mm brass nozzle with a stainless steel nozzle which has a much lower thermal conductivity, the extruder temperature had to be increased. So I increased the extruder to 235 C and the prints are now much cleaner in appearance. Also, I have set the Extrusion Multiplier to 0.95 and the Extrusion Width to 0.50mm. And lastly, I increased the Default Printing Speed from 4800 to 5200 mm/min. I guessed that now having a bit more plastic being extruded, I should bump up the speed a little.

The filament I am printing with is PLA. The brand is some Chinese make. The quality is probably not that great but at least now my new hardened stainless steel nozzles are working as expected and the printed items look OK.
