Build-A-Bomb

so here is a project i have been working on. i always wanted a real one of these but its impossible to find. you just can get them. this is a replica of an AN-M30 100lb bomb, ww2 era. i did a little research on it and found some schematics. unfortunately they were not extremely detailed. i modeled all this to be easily 3d printable with next to no support required. the body dia is 6.25" and overall length is about 28" which makes this 3/4 scale. the real thing is 8.2" dia. to save time, money and plastic the middle straight section of the body is a pieces of 6" pvc thin wall sewer/drain pipe i picked up from the local plumbing supply. the rivets and the detonator shaft are real. those are just decorative but much easier to buy and can be had for a few bucks from mcmaster. as this is you print the nose, tail, fin ring, 4 fins, 4 fin blades, tip and the fan blades. solvent weld it all together with acetone and you got yourself a bomb. :D i have all the parts printed now. i still need to prime, paint and faux finish it. ill probably do a couple of these and paint them differently. ill hang one from the ceiling from my shop or here in my office. i should be able to get this painted in the next week. this is also my first attempt at rendering one of my models. i did that all in keyshot.

Nice rendering job. But I know you, and I know that the finished model will look so real you'll have bomb disposal experts knocking on your door. Which is why it might be a good idea not to print it full scale.

Nowadays, even these make folks nervous:

But what else can you do with empty CO2 cartridges?

The fins test thin-wall printing, if you need a justification: http://softsolder.com/2011/10/21/zombie ... parations/

They're always the last tchotchke to go when I give a 3D printing presentation... [evil grin]

jimc: Knowing your finishing skills, it'll look exactly like the rendering and better than the real thing!

Thanks tim and thats awesome ed, i love it! Lol as for the legal side of things, there is really nothing. You used to be able to buy this stuff many years ago in your local army navy. Was a dime a dozen but no more. It has all disappeared. Now you can buy replicas for 500-$1000. I figure if i am going to have a replica ill make it myself plus i want to be able to make a few atleast so i can use them for paint samples when i goto shows. I sent the pic to just a few people i know and in 1 day i already have about 5 sold.

That's a real screw, though, right? Because that's the best looking printed screw I've ever seen otherwise.
