Makergear Z Knob

Post by ryaneb85 » Mon Apr 25, 2016 1:09 pm

Does anybody have the .stl for the factory default makgear Z knob? I have tried printing a few of the prettier ones found on thingiverse, but my collar seems too large to fit these. I damaged my original knob trying to remove the collar and need to move back to this, butthe .stl file is missing from the makergear wiki and github.

Or, does anyone have a knob design that fits the collar that comes with the M2?

I did print that one as well but it is still too small. Maybe I have a one-off, irregular sized collar... :?

There are two different sized knobs - the one that I got in early 2015 is larger than the current ones shipping, and (i think) they have a different sized collar than the current models.

Unfortunately, I don't think they posted the file for the bigger knob on the Wiki. I wound up switching to the lower profile knob when I switched to the dual.

(Your local hardware store doesn't have a smaller collar available?)

I haven't gone down the route of trying to find a replacement collar yet. I was hoping to take the easy option and print one, but it looks like I'll need to get a new one.

I don't suppose you know the size of the smaller collar? I'd rather get the "standard" size so as I can use the designs that are already available (my CAD skills are not good enough yet to customise my own  )

The measured ID on the collar is 8 mm, the OD on the shorter knob design is about 16 mm, but I can't check the depth to see if it's a different size. (I just noticed that mine didn't fit either when I tried to change mine out last year.)

I'll bet support could either help you out with a new knob, tell you the size of the collar, or maybe just send you the file for the original knob.

Yes, but. . . Those of us who got the dual upgrade all have a spare original knob just lying around, right?

Ryan---PM me, I can send you mine. I'm not doing anything with it.

No...i broke mine trying to get the collar out, or I'd have offered earlier. (I went without one for a while there.) But I'm glad someone managed to get the collar out without breaking it! (How'd you do it?)

When I wanted to print an alternative knob, I just bought a new one. There's a link to one from Amazon here: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:266807
It's probably not identical to the original, though. It is a 5/16" ID, which is 7.94mm. Also it's quite expensive for what it is.

There's also these that are 8mm ID 16mm OD:

That collar needs to be a tight press fit into the knob. Its like that even on the original stl from makergear. That is really the only thing that holds the knob on.
