3D printed model space plane

Post by brentlymills » Mon Jun 30, 2014 8:04 pm

Hello,

I bought my M2 to help me create original sci-fi space and air craft models of my own designs. After about a year of getting the process down for creating these models, I thought it would be good to show off one of the test creations.

This is a 1/20th scale experimental space plane model, it is about 20 inches in length with a 14 inch wing span. It was printed in 32 pieces, 7 are fuselage sections the remaining are wing parts, brackets, landing gear doors, landing gear legs, and small detail parts for the cockpit. I used Lego for the canopy glass, landing gear wheels, landing gear door and leg hinges. In total it took about a week to print all of the pieces and another couple of weeks to sand, glue, prime, and paint. I am still experimenting with methods to print panel lines and miscellaneous surface details, hence the overly smooth and sparsely detailed skin. And frankly, the paint job is sub par because I am new to detailing and do not yet have an airbrush.

I would hardly call that "sub-par". . .

What software are you using for the 3D design work?

Thanks!
I am using CATIA V5 for my design work, and Simplify 3D for slicing.

That's one of the nicest finished 3D printed model work I've seen, not that I've seen a lot. What are you using to paint?

Man, every time I read someone's post saying the print or painting is sub-par, I know I'm about to feel like a rookie again

Great job all around -- modeling, building AND painting. The flaws may pop out at you since you know exactly where they are, but to someone looking at it with fresh eyes, it looks really nice, Brent!
