3d printed landscape lighting

Post by jimc » Fri Aug 08, 2014 5:20 am

here are some landscape flood lights i designed. good for uplighting trees or the front of your house. even being 3d printed these things are more heavy duty than anything you can buy. so the light itself is made to slide into a 4" abs pipe then the printed trim ring goes on. a little acetone solvent bonds it all together. the light housing holds an led mr16 bulb. the bezel has 2 rubber o-rings in it. one to seal the lens and one to seal the bezel to the housing. the stainless screws hold it all together.

Uhhhhh...... WOW!
Hey, jimc, how is that print for water-tightness? How many perimeters are you using to keep it tight?

Well it doesnt need to be watertight as in submersible. You dont really want them like that. Even the headlights on your car are vented to allow moisture to escape. These have a small drain on the bottom. As long as the top lens is watertight and doesnt allow water to go near the bulb or base is all thats needed. The teardrop shape guides any moisture that may enter away from the bulb and into a channel to go out the drain. The housing though is fairly water resistant and the lens is wateright and i could only blow it in with 90psi of compressed air.

thanks guys. i really hated the cheap home depot ones and to buy good ones were very expensive and still not as heavy duty as these things are. my driveway is about 700ft long so now i have the trees leading up to the house all uplit. looks pretty cool. now time to move on to the back yard! ahhh the projects never end around here.

thanks!

only change i ever made to these was to that brown trim ring around the end of the abs pipe. that now has a 1/2" mesh grid that covers the end of the pipe to keep leaves from getting in the pipe during the fall and winter months here.
