Mehve 2 3D printed model

Post by brentlymills » Wed Jul 27, 2016 10:23 pm

Hi,

This is a modified version of the Mehve from the movie 'Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind'. It is 1/18th scale fits a Lego Belleville figure, has retracting landing skids, and movable flaps. It was inspired by my daughter, who after seeing the movie really wanted a toy version of the Mehve.

I CADded this up in a couple of days and printed the parts within a week. I began the long process of priming the printed surface and joining the various sections together. This process was made more difficult because I had made an error when splitting the sections to be printed. By printing the wings at a different orientation then the fuselage resulted in 1mm tolerance build up across the fuselage sections at the wing join. This embarrassing error was fixed by some heavy sanding between the 4 fuselage sections. Furthermore I did not calibrate my printing parameters correctly when changing my plastic stock in the midst of printing the 3 wing sections. This calibration error made fitting the wing sections together a challenge and required a good amount of puttying to smooth the section transitions.

Painted… Note messy work table.

I am thinking of redesigning it to be easier to assemble with less sanding and puttying...

Let me know what you think.

Thank you for looking!

Wow. That is some grandmaster level modeling and finishing.

What software are you modeling in? Did you have a lot of reference?

Thank you very much for the kind words!

This was modeled in CATIA and sliced in Simplify 3D.I used this (http://disney.wikia.com/wiki/File:Mehve_Concept.png) drawing as a reference though only for the proportions and basic outline.

All the parts were printed with 0.25mm nozzle at 0.15mm layer height.

Thank you!
Brent
