Hello All, so i've done at least 2 full spools of printing a variety of items. Initial tries had me try different ways to stick the ABS well so there was no warping or minimize it. What iv'e used is aquarnet hair spray and for a long time now it's worked well. Now i've noticed on recent prints pieces of glass have actually tore out onto the prints? I know i'm using a new can of aquanet and i have followed the normal process of waiting until the glass completely cools, taking it to the freezer for 2 minutes and my parts usually come up perfect with no struggles.
my question is, does the glass get weak over all during the process to the point that it begins to tear OR is my process causing the issue. I've had to flip and use only one side of my glass now since the tear is deep. Maybe 1 to 1.5 mm.
thank you for any advice

Re: Maker Gear M2 - Glass Tearing
No proof, but I suspect that the repeated heating and cooling of the glass over and over for the higher temp filaments sets up tiny stress fractures that eventually will cause a chunk to pull out when you pry off a print.
Something like Kapton on the glass will protect it, and you can put the adhesive right on top of the Kapton, just like the bare glass.

Re: Maker Gear M2 - Glass Tearing
hmmm tear is a very odd way to describe something happening to glass. glass doesn't really tear. do you mean chunks are pulling out or its chipping? if its the original glass that came with your printer then it is borosilicate so its meant to be heated and cooled. if chips are pulling out then I would avoid the freezer. I have heard of chunks pulling but 95% of the time I have heard this is when people put it in the freezer when the plate is hot. aquanet is great but its not a super strong adhesive like some hairsprays. I would consider it med tack and not really strong enough to pull a chunk out of the glass if allowed to cool at room temp.
Re: Maker Gear M2 - Glass Tearing
I've lost a few chucks lately to just glue stick and I never use the freezer I just let it cool.

thank you for the great feedback. Yes i mis-spoke when i said tear, but wasn't trying to find the right words. Chunks is more like it. Now i don't put it i the freezer right after print. Usually it's an overnight thing. The next morning id take it down and the parts come up with minimal effort. However i may avoid this practice all together. It is the original glass. I may just trying putting that special tape that came with the printer :p (how about that) . i thought that you had to use it for every single print though and felt it would be too much of a hastle.
can i put a nice layer on. Use glue or hair spray. Print then wipe off and do it over and over again?
thank you all again for the feedback.
i imagine for those that have those chunks missing you buy a new piece of glass?

The orange-gold tape that came with it is Kapton tape. You just apply it once to the cleaned glass, evenly, with no overlap. You don't have to take it off, you just leave it on and treat it like you do the surface of the glass. Spray hairspray on it, leave that until you need to spray and renew it, and you can put it in the freezer to cool off. it just keeps pieces of glass from popping off.jaguar-3d wrote:thank you for the great feedback. You can apply it to the side of the glass that is not missing any chunks, and then use the taped side to print on.

Re: Maker Gear M2 - Glass Tearing
oohh wow. that's is great. I guess i SHOULD have used it from the start. hehe. after sooo many prints the glass took beating then. Glad to know have a way to continue to use it. Not even sure how much a replacement costs.
thanks!!!
thanks!!!

One of the guys is having a housekeeping sale, and getting rid of some spare glasses.....you can check to see if he has any left. (Always a good idea to keep at least one spare.)
