Is there a clutch of some kind on the rev E. Z stepper that got oil in it? That's the only explanation I can think of as to why oil would cause your symptoms.
There is no mention of oiling or greasing the Z drive screw in the Rev E maintenance guide.

I know there is some kind of slip built in. I forgot to remove my printed Z lock once and it made an awful racket for a couple seconds until I shut it off and removed it.
I thought I broke something, but it's worked perfectly since then.

There is no clutch or slip built into a stepper motor it all has to do with electromagnets and poles so that sound you hear when you keep whatever the stepper is trying to move from moving is more or less the stator bouncing back and forth between the poles it needs to be at but can't align with. I probably didn't explain that right but anyway don't worry about the noise you can't really hurt (strip) a stepper.
