Printing Issues

Post by Robez0Rama » Fri Jan 27, 2017 6:28 pm

So I'm having 2 issues here. I've printed smaller things before and everything works, however this time I'm printing a bigger item and I am running into a few issues. The first is that when I load the filament and do a few mm of test it comes out jagged like, I'm not sure if this is because I'm doing it as 1mm increments or if the tension is too high, but when I loosen it up it doesn't feed well. The second issue is that when the bigger print is printing the filament doesn't stay attached to the bed and gets dragged around or it doesn't make nice right angles and then it comes up off the bed and the whole print is ruined, or it just bunches up at the nozzle and goes through the motions but doesn't stick the bed and just accumulates around the nozzle. The bed is leveled. The second problem is that when I start a print, then I end it and try to start over, after the filament is heated, the printer raises the bed to print but then the extruder starts to cool down when it says it's heating. Any ideas on any one of these issues would be awesome. I just ran into these problems recently. Thanks!

For reprint cool down issue, are you sure the bed isn't in process of heating? My S3D/Octoprint setup heats the bed and then heats the hot end. During a reprint, the hot end does tend to cool down a bit.

For jagged filament, is the hot end temp set correctly? I'm not sure what kind of jagged you are talking about, but I found slight jaggedness with too low of a temp (not a smooth strand).

Ugh! Okay, several issues it is.....

1. Don't worry about intermittent jagged purging....frequently there is a little glob of cold unmelted filament stuck to the nozzle from a prior print that causes the filament to go sideways for a bit until it melts. Give it time. Purge about 10-20 mm at a time, 1 mm increments would take forever.

2. Sounds like the main problem on the larger print is either:

1. You haven't actually got it leveled.
2. Your Starting Height is set too far away from the bed for the first layer and you need to reset it. You want that first layer to be squished down a little.
3. You need to be using adhesive or hairspray.
4. You're printing with too low a bed temp.
5. You have a low spot in the glass, or the X gantry is bowed slightly.

One and four are not as likely. Two is highly likely. Five is possible, but not as likely. I'd start with number 2. :D
