My MakerGear Holy Grail

Post by JohnnyRobot » Tue Feb 10, 2015 6:11 am

So, I'm coming up on my second year of being an M2 owner.

I must say. I love this printer. I (*think I*) have a good understanding of how it works. I know what it is capable of, and I know it's limitations.

However. I've been having some trouble lately. My wife saw a design on thingiverse that she's in love with. ( http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:202774 )

Is it just me? Or is this piece unreasonably difficult to print? I've been trying on and off for about 3 months now, no luck. (Hasn't been high priority, but still!?!)

Does anyone here have any suggestions?

That part has a lot of insane 10 degree overhangs ... I bet the sample was printed at Shapeways. It might be possible with a lot of support material.

I've tried the overkill support route with no luck.

Whatever slicer I try, It still ends up dumping material.

Well, I gave it a shot. 1mm spacing support with my usual print settings. It printed just fine, but I was a little too vigorous in removing the supports and broke off parts of the rim, then I gave up the rest for lost. Here's a photo of it in its unpeeled state:

The part itself seemed pretty good, it's just getting the support off that's a pain. If you were patient and took your time with it, which I was not, I'm sure it would turn out nicely.

Not bad... 1mm spacing? I'm going to have to try that. I'll post how it turns out.

I'd like to point out that this is something wives are good at. When I finally got my MendelMax running, it was tuned and calibrated as one of the fastest hobbyist 3D printers in the midwest (I could push something like 20mm^3/sec of plastic, 4 years ago). I did this with high print speeds of nearly 150mm/sec, and a huge nozzle (0.66mm) and fat layers (0.5mm). Telling her all this, I asked her to pick a part for me to print, something with wide, flat areas without a lot of retractions and hops, and certainly no support material as the software for it was terrible then.

She wanted one of these: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3493

It's this kinda stuff I want a dual extruder setup for: 1 nozzle with PLA and the other with PVA or some water-soluble support material.
