Question about Z stepper motor

Hello everyone! I just got my M2 assembled and tested last night. Everything works well so far, except that when I was jogging along Z axis, it accidentally hit the limit at the bottom, and the Z stepper motor seemed skipping gears and made some loud grinding noise. I stopped the machine immediately after that. Would this cause any damage to the leadscrew and the Z motor? Thanks!

Sure hope not - done it a dozen times at least.

Me too! Just don't let it happen again. Or else...

I was hoping there is a mechanism in stepper motors, when there is excessive force applied, it just skips without causing any damage. I did a sample print after that and it seems to be working fine, I'll make sure it won't happen again!

I may well be wrong here, but I think the field would just slip if the force applied was too great.

It does no damage at all. There is no connection between the all thread shaft and the stepper. The all thread just has the motor's rotor loctited onto the end. The rotor makes no connection to the outer case or windings of the motor at all. The noise is just the magnets slipping

Check out the remix from that print, too. Tim made a nice one that snaps on.
