Need help for S3D support settings

Post by ic3CuT » Tue Mar 01, 2016 4:37 pm

Hi everyone, i'm using the M2 since september 2015. I have tried a lot of settings to reachthe best quality for my print. Now the quality is great except one thing, when I need to use the support material. I have tried many settings, but I havent found the best combination to get a smooth round surface like the video we can found on Youtube. I also tried to use HIPS with PLA and it's not working better.

There is my actual setting of my single extruder (V4).

Thank you

How are you using HIPS as support for PLA with a single extruder???

Link to the video you're talking about so we can see what it is you want to try to duplicate. ;)

Your settings look okay from a general printing standpoint with a couple of exceptions - your bed temp at 90°C is too high for PLA. Keeping it too hot makes the base too soft and you'll get warping and slumping problems (aka: heat soak). (Change the bed temp to 50°C and see if it helps.) You can also try printing with an extruder temp of 200°C instead of 210°C. PLA needs to cool off immediately after it exits the nozzle, or there will be scads of warping and curling, and the higher the temps you use, the longer it takes to cool. The cooler you can print and get good bonding, the better, with PLA.

Are you using an old version of S3D? (Version 2.0?) The newer version has a bunch of different options for infill shape which provide better support for structures (fast honeycomb, honeycomb, etc.) I ask because you are using rectilinear infill, which only prints every other layer, and doesn't have as good support, and you have a 30% overlap setting on your infill, and that seems high. (Try 15% if you are using version 2.2, 10% if you are using version 3.0+) And if you still have the old version, it's worth the time to update to 3.02, the latest version.

Smooth rounded surfaces on the underside of a print are just about impossible to print out of PLA without introducing additional cooling (like a small desk fan pointed directly at it) and solid support with a couple of dense support layers. (Or you can remove the fan guard on the bed fan. It increases the cooling power of the fan.) Your settings for support look fine - just remember to check the box so the support gets generated.

Many folks also like to just slice the objects in half and place the flat surfaces down on the bed so that the smooth rounded surfaces are on top when printing. (That actually makes for the best rounded surfaces, and you can just duplicate the object, flip it over, and then sink both objects under the bed by the same amount in S3D to cut it in half at the same place. Anything below the bed will not be printed.) When done, glue the two halves together. Gives the best overall finish. :D

Thank you for you help, I will try all these suggestion:

The things I forget to tell you is I have 2 M2 Printer, 1 with single and the other with Dual

The temparature bed is an error, I print on Buildtak and the bed is normaly at 0

I will try the honeycomb structure tp test (I have S3D 3.02)

I will make an update after my tests

Okay, that makes sense. :D
