Check out Smooth-On XTC3D or similar thin epoxy for a similar effect. There's a few threads on it around here somewhere. I played around with vapor smoothing in my early days, but it was difficult to get a consistent result top to bottom.

This may remain an "unsolved mystery". But the obvious solution is to get the metal motor mount. . .

I've looked at XTC3d. It works well. Acetone is a little faster and cheaper. I'm having decent results with my paint can system. I'll post it up when I get pics.

I've got the metal motor mount but was waiting for some printer down time to install it and the dampers. Ask and ye shall receive. :)
