Can someone tell me why this degradation is happening?

Post by wisdomknight » Wed Apr 27, 2016 12:25 am

Im using Hatchbox gray ABS @ 250 for extruder and a heated bed @ 110 and the print is at .100mm
I used elmer's purple glue stick and the print finally stayed on the bed.

I f I do it at .200mm it comes out good.
Here's the model Im trying to print:

Never tried to print at that fine a resolution...
What size nozzle are you using, and how wide is your extruded thread? How fast are you printing it?

(If you're printing at 0.1mm layer height, Insta would probably tell you to run the first layer at 210% layer height, so you get good adhesion. I'd want to know the answers to the questions, and I'd probably suggest that you slow it down and make sure you're not using a nozzle that's too large for that sized thread.)

My nozzle is .35mm
extruded width is: 0.35
default speed is 3600.0
X/Y movement: 4800.0
Z movement: 1000.0

Part of the problem that you might be seeing is due to the ratio of extruded layer width to layer height. Ideally, that ratio should be around 1.8 or you can go up to 2.0.

Extruded width = 0.4 mm
Layer Height = 0.2 mm

0.4 mm/0.2 mm = 2.0

That might be why it looks okay when you print at 0.2mm and not at 0.1mm layer height.

But if your extruded width is less than the nozzle diameter (0.35 mm) it can get smeared around like that - it will not necessarily be placed where you want it placed - the nozzle has no control over it. So if you changed the extruded width to something like 0.2 mm, in keeping with the formula above - the nozzle can squirt it out of either side, and will not necessarily place it correctly out of a 0.35 mm nozzle. The extruded width always has to be larger than the ID of the nozzle, and smaller than the OD of the flat face on the nozzle in order to give the nozzle correct placement ability. For a 0.35 mm nozzle, it has to fall in the range of 0.35 to 0.50 mm.

So that's why I asked what your extrusion width was when you were printing at 0.1 mm layer height. If it's under 0.35 mm, you need to go to a smaller nozzle to get better control over the thread placement.

It also helps with placement to slow down the extrusion, especially on little stuff like that.

If you haven't read it yet - a lot of these things are discussed in the Beginner's Guides (choose the correct one for your model of the printer) that are pinned in the How To section of the forum.

Did you recently get your printer? (After March 1,2016?) If so, you'll want to read the Rev. E version of the Beginner's Guide. (Just making sure you check the right one out.)

Try the same exact settings, 12 of the little things at once.
