Filament Peeling Away

Post by CCRN » Thu Aug 04, 2016 3:59 am

I am using PLA filament on a design and I cannot figure out why it is peeling away from/Not sticking to the previous layer of filament. I am using 3D Solutech Filament at 220C and the bed temp of 70C. The first layer seemed to adhere to the blue painter tape bed fine. This is second layer when the 50 mm fan kicks in. I have used this filament for some other prints without any issue like this, so it could be the design. This is the link to it.

Here is an attachment with what I am seeing. I can try different filament in a few days. Got to head back to work as an RN to pay for my toys. :D

Thanks,

Jerold

In that case it is partially the design. Curves have a lot of forces acting on them that make it difficult for the filament to stick to itself (Ed can explain it if he happens to be around later.).

Print that one with a single outline. Might not be a bad idea to slow down the print speed as well.

I did turn down the speed from 4800 to 3000 for the attached image above. Should all of the layer settings for S3D be 1? See attached for how the above was set. Once I know how to set the single layer correctly, I can try again.

Just so you know, I did let this print fully one time and only the bottom side had loose filament. Once it built up in size, the top side printed fine.

Thanks,
Jerold

Outline/Perimeter Shells = 1

Other than that, your settings look fine. (One perimeter shell is actually going to be stronger in this case.) :)

Are the bottom edges of that model filleted? (Is that a word.)

If so make sure you are printing inside-out and not outside in.

I set the outline perimeter shell to 1 and let it print again at 3000 mm/min. Still had separation and it looked like it was still printing too fast. I slowed it down to 1000 mm/min and it still is separating.

Picture attached. Not sure what to do next.

Thanks,

Hmmmmn. You could try increasing your first layer height to 100%, and the first layer extrusion width to 110%. It might be underextruding a little. Increase the extruder temp by 5 degrees.

Oh, just got a look at the bed - try some adhesive too.

Is it just that model or does it happen with everything you print?

Maybe it's a model issue what does the preview look like?

I remember trying to print this model early on and having the same issue. I just checked the model again, and it's definitely a model issue. There is a small fillet on the bottom, causing an overhang in the first few layers. Overhangs and concave curves are incompatible, the filament will be pulled to the outside because there just isn't anything to hang onto.

If you want a perfect print of this model, I would split it in half, print each half with the flat side down, and glue the two halves together. You can do this easily in most slicers just by duplicating, flipping one, and dropping each half down through the bed by half their height. Or, you can just drop the model down just enough to get past the fillet, which will give you a 90 degree edge on one side. Just keep that side to the outside when you're using it, or sand it down a little.

I am going to try a different design of a similar object and see if it prints well. Is unfortunate that this one will not print and according to jsc is problematic. I checked the comments for the design and no one seemed to have had a problem. Oh well.

Thanks to all who assisted. I appreciate your help!
