Vase Sample Print Questions

Post by CCRN » Mon Aug 15, 2016 6:26 pm

Hello,

I am starting to learn Rhinoceros and did a beginning design of a small vase (Pictures attached).
RhinoVase.stl
(1.03 MiB) Downloaded 599 times
First, there is a line that forms based on the start of a new layer of extrusion. I've read that S3D can do spiral extrusion and avoid this issue. I am noticing that S3D in spiral mode is forming a top layer when it gets ready for printing. I've opened a forum post for this question on S3D.

Second, when the print gets to the top, it starts to air print and falls in on itself. I guess, that means my design is bad and the angle is too flat when it gets to the top. It is a single layer wall too, so maybe that is the reason. Was wondering if there is a way to get this to print. Supports on the inside of the vase do not generate, so I am not sure if there is a way to address this.

Thanks,

Jerold

In Vase mode, S3D will do spiral extrusion on a SOLID object. (Not a vase shape as is commonly attempted. A vase shape is already a vase, and is not printed in vase mode.) :o (yeah, weird, I know)

To print without that line forming, on the Layer Tab in S3D - choose the Use Random Start Points for all Perimeters option.

Your options for the vase design are:
1. Keep the incline on the vase where it narrows to the neck at 45° or above and there won't be an issue.
(In S3D you can change the level where support is generated by a couple of degrees, but you've still got gravity working against you, so it won't be much of a gain.)
2. You can manually place support with S3D where you need it - even inside of a vase, but you are not going to be able to get it back out of there.
3. Design your vase like this:

Hi Jules,

So it looks like i will try #1 first, as I know I how to do it in Rhino. :D

I am using the Loft command to provide surface to some circles placed at different heights, so there isn't any wall thickness in the design. The vase is essentially as thick as the shell number I set in the slicer.

Now I just need to figure out how to make the object solid and then create the void in the center and I think I can get #3.

I guess I need to better understand how the shell perimeter of an object works based on design. Modeling/design creates the thickness of an object, but shell number can alter that in the slicer. Kind of hard for me to wrap my head around some of this. :P

Thanks,
Jerold.

It does take a while to get familiar with what each function does....it's one heck of a program! (Still trying to figure it out myself.)

Instead of using the Shell on that shape, create the solid vase, and then create a narrow solid cylinder and subtract it from the solid vase shape.
(Best way to do a solid shape like that is create a curve for half of it and then revolve it around an axis, 360°. Also a fun function to play with in Rhino. :D )

You can use the Shell on other stuff, but hollow things that have that narrow neck with a flare-out don't work well from a printing standpoint.

Are you using the Windows or Mac version of Rhino? I was going to go with Mac, but it feels like the Windows version is the better interface. Its $1000, but my printer was almost twice that. It also looks like support for Rhino is fantastic as well.

Looks like I can use Boolean Difference and a cylinder to core out the solid vase.

Windows version. (And it was insanely expensive.)

But i tell you what - you do get what you pay for with software. I looked at Solidworks too - my brother, who's a vet, picked up the low price test version for me to try as a Christmas gift. What i didn't realize was that the license expires on that after only a year, and he had hung on to it for the better part of eight months before he gave it to me, so i barely got a chance to look at it before it cratered.

And that pretty much ticked me off, so adios Solidworks.

Rhino is a very reasonably priced alternative for all that you can do with it. :D

(And yes, Boolean Difference is the way to go with the cylinder.)

Expensive yes, but not as expensive as my wife's Generations embroidery digitizing software! It was like 2700 dollars. I though the same thing about Solidworks, with the year license then pay up again. I've been impressed with Rhino and the support they offer, so I am 99% sure I am going to go with the Windows version. Look forward to your help

Instead of lofting diameter circles, why not just draw the vertical silhouette and rotate extrude it? Easier to adjust later, too.

And I'd like this opportunity to plug Fusion 360 or OnShape. Both have free for hobbyist tiers and are excellent parametric history based modelers. That means if you don't like the shape, you can just go back in time, adjust your sketch, and run it back forward to see your object with the new changes.

I need to try Fusion 360. (could sure use a parametric modeler for a couple of files in the works) :)
