Pinion Gear Position

Post by CCRN » Tue Oct 18, 2016 10:51 pm

Today I was swapping filaments for a multiple alternating color pencil holder. On the last color, the filament drive stopped advancing and the filament was peeking forward into the gap between the filament drive and the pinion gear. I don't think the hotend clogged. I removed the filament drive and was able to manually advance some esun cleaner filament through without any problems.

I moved the pinion gear forward about 3mm and reinstalled the drive. This seemed to close the gap and filament resumed feeding and printing well.

Where exactly is the pinion gear supposed to be positioned? I have used the printer 3-4 days a week and lots of nights since June. Wondering if the pinion gear is wearing on me. How long to they last before they need to be replaced?

Thanks,
Jerold

What happens is that sometimes vibrations of the printer can cause the drive gear screw to get loose. Make sure you get that tightened up. You don't want that shifting on you, it will just get worse. The toothed drive gear needs to be positioned opposite the roller.

How long do these typically last before need a replacement? Wondering if it is a part I should have on hand.

Thanks,

I haven't worn one out yet (over a year) but I'm using one of the older ones that have deeper teeth. The problem with yours was likely just a loose screw, they don't wear out very rapidly.

It's okay to pick up a spare with your next order from MakerGear. I had them throw in a couple (I have a dual) with the last order. (Just to have it on hand if you need one - I hate waiting for shipping, even though MG is pretty snappy.) :)
