Ripple / Shadow effect on raised details?

Post by sTaLa » Sun Feb 12, 2017 5:48 am

Hi there,

Any time I have a raised detailed on a side wall (lettring for example) I can see a ripple effect of that detail. I have been wondering for a while what could cause this, but did not come to any kind of solution so far. Does any of you have any idea what could cause this?
Thanks!

I have kinda wondered the same thing. I think it was to do with movement speed.

Mmm... Maybe...
The black one is PLA. I think it was at 60 mm/s.
The blue one is PETG at 40 mm/s.

Ringing is typically caused by high acceleration. I'll let an M2 pro discuss the best fix as I haven't dug into the machine that far yet. In the mean time, here's some reading material: https://www.simplify3d.com/support/prin ... nd-ringing

It does have to do with acceleration, (actually deceleration), not the printing speed. Couple of things you can do to make it a little bit better...

1. Slow down the default acceleration by adding the following code into your starting script:

M201 X1000 Y1000 ; lower default accelerations

2. Turn the print catty-corner on the plate. (45°angle) It forces the machine to go slower. (Most of the problems with ringing that I saw were along the X axis at high speeds.)

3. Install Nema 17 dampers. (Do a search in the Modifications section) Those are the very best thing for dampening ringing, but they require you to take a couple of things apart, and you need to be careful how you reassemble them. (Getting the belt too tight can actually cause a bowing effect on the X rail.) They really quiet things down too. Great mod.

Thanks for the replies!
I will probably begin by looking at the Nema dampeners. I read about it before, but thought they were mainly for noise improvements so I did not really dig into that.

Thanks again guys!

I just ordered two dampeners and will see what they do!

For the acceleration, well, my PETG was already set at 1000 because I took my initial profil from you Jules. And all my PETG has ringing.

And you got to to tell me what you mean by catty corner. I googled the thing and had no luck.

It's a phrase we use down here....means turn it at a 45° angle on the bed. :D
