Coming into this late, but for what it's worth if you don't mind a matte finish on the bottom, you can use blue painters tape as well. It's a fraction of the cost of kapton, available everywhere, and doesn't require any of the extra coatings / magic eraser stuff. I had problems with glue sticks making the part stick TOO well to the build plate, especially with large surface area prints.

Also, that kind of beveling can be caused by extruding the plastic too hot. ABS will ridge / curl individual layers terribly if you overheat it (aside from off-gassing toxic fumes...), whereas PLA (since it actually goes through a bit of a harsher phase change) will behave better when over-driven but not great. Not all PLA plastics are made the same, so it may take some experimentation with particular manufacturers to get it right. Moisture plays a role here too - if the plastic has absorbed moisture you'll get weird problems like this.
