Initial Problems

Post by 3dPrintingMD » Fri Oct 02, 2015 5:41 am

Hi all, just wanted to start by saying I really have tried, searched, tweeked, and still can't figure this one out.

My nozzle will not print close enough to the glass. Even though I have done the Z-Stop and its less than a business card, still when it goes to print it move up about 10-20mm from the glass.

In the machine control panel, I have ensured the axis are all zeroed. I click home all, and all readouts are at 0.00.

Yet I click print and its as noted way high off the bed. I'm really at a loss. This is a brand new, V4 machine.

Yeah, I was about to tell you to adjust the Z-Offset, but 10 to 20 mm is waaaay off. You are either trying to print something that is hanging in midair, or something isn't set up correctly.

You will find the answers to a large gap problem in the Getting Started Guide here:

viewtopic.php?f=8&t=2778

And one other thing to check if you are using S3D, rotate the item on the screen so you can see underneath it. I actually had one the other day that was hanging in midair, although it looked fine from the top. Tried to print it three or four times before i thought to look at the bottom. It had a bad face that was sticking out below the print.

Thanks Jules,

I am going to keep trying and see what I can figure out.

I keep trying to print different things, but going to focus on one item and see what changes I can make that will make improvements.

Going to try the Z-Offset, and see where it gets me.

The one thing note worthy at least to me, is that there was no issue printing from the SD card that Makergear supplied. Those items printed out well. (Which leads me to believe it something in S3D.)

Like you're guessing, if you did the Z leveling and the sample prints worked fine it's very likely something in S3D.

As Jules said, your model could be hanging in midair. If you hit the "Center and Arrange" button the software should automatically move it down to the bed. And rotate the screen (left click and drag) to verify the part is on the bed.

Otherwise, you could check the First Layer Height (Layer tab of process settings). If that were somehow set at like, 1000% that could produce the effect you are seeing.

Appreciate the response. I am still lost. Starting over today.

So the first thing I wanted to do was try the gcode files on the MG provided SD card.

The tallthin prints good. It does have the vertical stop/start point that goes from the bottom to the top. Another user here had the exact same experience.

The Bracelet prints well, no noticeable issues.

The Bigfoot prints in the air, the same exact issue I was having with all other prints.

Going to post a video in a few minutes.

Also in this video its running from the gcode on the sd card. I'm under the impression that my FFF would have no impact on something that is already gcoded.
