What Does this wave pattern in the extruded filament mean

Post by tofu702 » Wed Feb 01, 2017 2:17 am

When purging the nozzle before prints I've recently started seeing this odd wave pattern (see picture) in what comes out of the nozzle. I've started seeing a corresponding odd surface texture on prints at higher print speeds (strangely, slow print speeds don't show this). Bridging now also doesn't work very well (Bridges tend to get lumpy), but other that and the odd texture, everything still prints fine. I've played with extruder tension a bit, but it doesn't seem to have had much effect.

Any thoughts on what is going on here?

Have you played with temperature? I had a similar effect when I was dialing in a spool's temp but it went away with a higher temp. The fact that slower speed printing doesn't show this issue points to temp as a possibility as well.

Thanks! That seems to have fixed it. It's odd--I've been using these settings for Makergear white PLA for many months. I wonder if this spool is different from the others.
