What material are you using for the quadcopter? I built my first quad (a 250) this Summer and currently have it disassembled for maintenance (after a crash) and am trying to more to a slightly bigger prop size. A custom frame with slightly longer arms might be good. But I've already experienced props that flex under extreme thrust and would rather not experience arms that break under thrust - are 3D printed arms string enough?

Yes and no. They arms can be quite tough when designed correctly, but if you hit the wrong way.... If I were still printing frames, I would use the PETG or EPC polycarbonate for arms. I race over grass and they do OK on a 250, bad crashes on a loaded 500 AP frame are not going be pretty.

Now I use a CNC router to cut frames and use 3D printed accessory parts. I would have kept printing frames, but when you can CNC cut G10 in your garage, well, that's what you are gonna do.

I have a Shopbot Desktop with a spindle. http://www.shopbottools.com/mproducts/desktop.htm

I have also used the Shopbot with a digitizing probe to make scans for printing on the M2. This is a pistol grip I am working on for printing. My original was sculpted in clay, which I used as a reference for the wood version made in cherry, but wanted to be able to make a printable version. It would be very difficult to draft an exact match in CAD, so I scanned it.

A competition pistol grip, nice. You're really quite handy with the software side of things.

WOW that's pretty awesome. I just made a set using some eSUN PolyMorph over some 3d printed bases but I would have loved to 3d print the whole things but I too figured it would be way to hard to model in CAD.

Well, I have had a bit of a time with my probe scan. It does not resolve edges very well, so I am not getting the accuracy I want. The probe setup is not geared for such a small item.

I am currently printing parts for this laser scanner and waiting for my kit to arrive. http://store.murobo.com/atlas-3d-kit/

Just for fun, here is a pic of my wood grips installed on my air pistol. I just had the red dot sight for testing. I play at shooting Olympic style 10meter air pistol in the garage while my prints run. I suck, but it kills the time and give me some Zen moments.

The thing of it is, I never want to go through the effort of sculpting another set of grips again. That's why I am going for a printed version.

@jimc- Thanks! I am getting better, but it is only from making the same mistakes 3-4 times in a row. Scanning technology and directly manipulating meshes via Meshlab and Meshmixer is definitely the beginnings of a whole new learning curve for me.

While posting in another thread I remembered I never put up my nearly finished project pics. This is in yellow PLA with black PLA inlay (added later, not dual extruded). They feel good, but I need to make a small tweak in the fit and reprint them in a wood filament, although several folks seem to like the plastic grip over the wooden one. The texture of the print makes a wonderful grip surface, but the carved wood grip, just feels so sexy in the hand.

The laser scanner was a fail, it was a project that was fun, but gave terrible results for this project. I needed real accuracy, not just a scan suitable for a video game. On the plus side, I learned a lot about working with meshes. I went back to the Shopbot and made eight different probe scans at a much higher resolution. They were then mated and tweaked in Meshmixer for the final model.

It was, simply put, an absolutely ungodly amount of work, but worth it. 8-)
