Nope, don't mind. I think my version must have been corrupted somehow. (between that and the mandala thing, it had to be something in my version that everyone else wasn't seeing.)

it looks good in netfabb but s3d says there are self intersecting triangles. i tried to upload it to the netfabb azure cloud repair thing and it just fails and gives and error every time. there is something up with that model. not sure what it is.

How would one go about finding self-intersecting triangles in a model?

oh there we go. i put the model in netfabb and just ran a repair sequence on it anyway and it did find some errors on some edges. i opened up the repaired model using your fff that was having issues and it slices great. here is the file. try it out on your end and see if you get the error. fyi you dont have to uninstall other versions of s3d. you can have multiple versions on you machine that will all run.

Thanks jim, never would have found those. i'll try it again after I get the new computer up and running. (And at the risk of causing insta more heartburn, I have to ask one more question? What is netfabb? )

Last question insta, I promise!

if you own a 3d printer then you should have netfabb installed on your computer. it really is a must. there is a free version. google it. download it. its a model repair software....more or less. there is also the cloud version which works awesome as well. actually this is the first thing i ever got an error with. i have also never in my life seen rhino export an imperfect stl. very weird.

oh and if insta gives you a hard time...say "suck it insta"

haha "authority"

I actually bought Netfabb. I use it a LOT more than I thought I would. I have it set to my default handler for STL files ... makes the "download, repair, export" workflow really fast.
