even though i did get it working i just wen through your steps just to do some checking. i ran the iwconfig and everything looked good. of course i am connected now so i guess it had better be showing the access point. lol. i reopened the network interfaces file to compare what you wrote to what my file says. here is what my interfaces file says. its a little different than what you posted. maybe you can decipher it a little better than me.

auto lo

iface lo inet loopback
iface eth0 inet dhcp

allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan inet manual
wpa-roam /etc/wpa-_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
iface default inet dhcp

did i mention that i hate networking lol. no matter what its always a pia. i know just enough to get me in trouble
