S3D - Adjust coast distance after first layer
S3D - Adjust coast distance after first layer
I never know if these kind of questions should be posted under tech support or software, but anyway, here we go..
Is there a way to adjust the coast distance after the first layer in S3D? My first layer goes down pretty slow and leaves too big a gap. However, I need that coast distance for the rest of the print to keep blobs to a minimum. What I am trying to do is set the coast to 0 for the first layer, then increase it to say 2mm for all subsequent layers. Is this possible?

Re: S3D - Adjust coast distance after first layer
Hmmmm. You do come up with some interesting questions.
It wouldn't be easy if it was do-able. Might be able to do something by creating various processes or parameter sets and setting them based on layer height, but I've never tried it. (Great, now I'm going to have to go look at it. )
Easiest thing though would probably be to switch to using Wipe instead of Coast. (It prevents blobs, but doesn't cut off the flow prematurely, so you don't get that gap forming along the starting point.)
Other thing you can do is choose Use Random Start Points on the Layer tab. Breaks up that line.

Re: S3D - Adjust coast distance after first layer
yup just make 2 processes with the only thing different is the coasting and the start and stop height. have the second process come in at layer 2

There you go......awesome!jimc wrote:yup just make 2 processes with the only thing different is the coasting and the start and stop height. have the second process come in at layer 2

awesome! I thought you could only assign different processes to different parts, so that's really useful to know!
Re: S3D - Adjust coast distance after first layer
I can't seem to get this to work. I have my first layer process set to start at 0.00mm and stop at 0.2mm, and my other layers to start at 0.2mm, stop checkbox unticked. It looks like it's still coasting on the first layer.
Any tips?

Re: S3D - Adjust coast distance after first layer
Did you... actually turn off coast in the first process? Just checking the obvious things first.
Re: S3D - Adjust coast distance after first layer
I did. Although you did make me doubt myself for a minute!
Re: S3D - Adjust coast distance after first layer
well I feel silly. When I said I had turned off coast in the first process, all I actually did was set it to zero. The tick box was still checked, and it seems that it still wanted to coast even though the value was 0. Tick box unchecked, coasting stopped. Feel free to point and laugh

Zip up a factory file and we can take a look.
